Rebel în California (original The O.C.) a fost un serial american de televiziune difuzat de televiziunea Fox în Statele Unite ale Americii (din 5 august 2003 până în 22 februarie 2007) și de Pro TV în România, având în total patru sezoane. Serialul descrie povestea unui grup de tineri și familiile acestora, care trăiesc în Orange County, California. Rebel în California a fost difuzat în peste 50 de țări din lumea întreagă și a fost unul dintre cele mai populare seriale în 2003.
Acțiunea din film are în centru pe Ryan Atwood, un tânăr provenit dintr-o familie dezbinată care este adoptat de Sandy și Kirsten Cohen. Ryan și fratele său vitreg Seth interacționează cu lumea bună din Orange County, California, împreună cu prietenele lor, Marissa Cooper, Summer Roberts și Taylor Townsend.

Kelly Rowan - Kirsten Cohen
Kirsten Nichol was born in Newport Beach in Orange County, California. Kirsten is the eldest daughter of Caleb and Rose Nichol, elder sister of Hailey Nichol, and elder half-sister to Lindsay Gardner. She comes from a very wealthy background: her father is a real estate developer who founded The Newport Group, one of the most powerful companies in California. Kirsten was raised Presbyterian. She is presumably Scottish American.

Adam Brody - Seth Cohen
Seth is very sarcastic and uses irony to find the humor in the events that occur around him. He has a positive nature, and although sometimes his humor is misconceived as ill-mannered, he tries to joke his way out of sticky situations, and is more likely to laugh off the negatives and be overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the positives in his, and everyone else's, life. He is shown throughout the series to be self-obsessed and neurotic, with a tendency to make himself the center of attention. However, in many episodes, he proves to be a sweet and genuine guy with good intentions and a good heart, and this is often overlooked by others. Seth is a very bubbly character, thanks to the likes of his "only true friend" Ryan, and is prone to not knowing when to keep his mouth shut, however this is more endearing and humorous, than irritating. He is a self-proclaimed geek and likes comic books, science fiction, video games, and old movies.

Rachel Bilson - Summer Roberts
Summer Roberts grew up in Newport Beach, California, with her wealthy father, Dr. Neil Roberts (Michael Nouri). For much of the series, she also lived with a stepmother, named Gloria (unseen character), who is often referred to as "the stepmonster" due to her mood swings and various addictive pills. Summer is, throughout the first few episodes, portrayed as a shallow, materialistic gossip who is ditzy and can have an occasional bitchy nature.

Mischa Barton - Marissa Cooper
Marissa is introduced as a rich socialite in Newport Beach, California whose family (mother Julie, father Jimmy, and younger sister Kaitlin) go through some dramatic changes over the course of the seasons. She is a troubled person before the series begins, with a history of substance abuse and rebellious behavior. This is even evident from the first episode of Season 1 where she is left on her front door by her friends, passed out from drinking. From there, she is detailed to have private emotions due to the number of lost loved ones in her life and lack of understanding from her family and friends. The backstory on her friendship with Summer Roberts showcases it as a powerful bond, forged during the second grade. One of her deepest connections, and having continued and strengthened throughout the years, the friendship is a central element on the show for three seasons.

Melinda Clarke - Julie Cooper
Julie Cooper is portrayed as a manipulative, witty, cunning, and devious woman who often uses friends, family, and associates to her advantage. She is highly driven, ambitious and always strives for social and financial success. She is an attractive and rather promiscuous woman who often uses her beauty to exploit wealthy and influential men. In the first two seasons, Julie has often been portrayed as a villainous character, but throughout the third and fourth seasons, she is shown to have mellowed, and a more kind, caring side of her is revealed.

He is often described as extremely unreliable, immature and cowardly, due to his actions. (eg. stealing his client's money, borrowing money from dangerous men and failing to pay them back). However, he's also shown to be a loving father and was far closer to his daughter, Marissa, than her mother was. He was known to be talk of the town with his good looks and rivaled Sandy Cohen's wife Kirsten Cohen

Alan Dale - Caleb Nichol
Caleb was one of the wealthiest people in Newport Beach (said to be the Donald Trump of the West Coast), owning the real estate company The Newport Group which owned a large amount of properties in Newport. He was portrayed as quite a suave businessman that was known for dishonest business dealings and practice. He also was somewhat controlling and manipulative, shown perhaps by the way he treated his daughter Kirsten who worked for him, who found it increasingly hard to please him and earn his approval.

Chris Carmack - Luke Ward
When Luke, Summer Roberts, and Seth Cohen were all thirteen years old, he had a paintball birthday party at the same time that Seth had his Bar Mitzvah. Summer's father, Neil Roberts, was going to make Summer go to Seth's party, but when Summer's mother left abruptly, she didn't attend either one to deal with the divorce. This, coupled with most students choosing to attend Luke's party, caused Seth to have self-confidence issues for several years. Luke had dated Marissa Cooper for a long period of time before Ryan Atwood came to Newport Beach, beginning their relationship in the fifth grade on a class trip to the Museum of Tolerance (according to Seth in the episode The Model Home. Despite this, he had cheated on her for a long period of time. Luke is portrayed as a stereotypical jock.
